Maytag’s guide to finding the model and serial numberMaytag age: legacy letters and newer serial formats
Legacy Maytag household-appliance date codes · Sources checked October 12, 2026
Maytag technical education material documents a legacy serial with eight digits followed by two letters. In that scheme, the first of those final letters is the year code and the second is the month code.
The guide lists E as 2004 and L as June within its documented period. This is a format-specific explanation; newer products may use a different scheme, and repeated year codes need context.
A masked date-code example
••••••••EL
Within the legacy period covered by the manufacturer guide, the EL ending represents June 2004. Masking hides the sequence digits while retaining the date-code example.
Do not apply this legacy chart to all Maytag serials. The model, product family and plausible era help distinguish formats and repeated dates.
Checking the manufacture date
Use the format that belongs to this product family. A printed production date, a supported serial code or manufacturer confirmation can establish the age. Repeating year codes may leave more than one possible year; a model-series introduction date helps narrow the range but does not date your individual unit.
How long does a Maytag stove last?
Ranges & Ovens typically last 13 to 15 years. Use, water quality and maintenance matter more than the brand. A gas range that clicks without lighting, or an oven that takes much longer to heat, usually needs an igniter or element, not a new range.
