York serial numbers depend on the equipment family
York HVAC identification and format differences · Sources checked October 12, 2026
Use the complete equipment rating plate when checking a York furnace, air conditioner or heat pump. A commercial unit’s serial layout is not necessarily the layout of a residential furnace.
For example, a Johnson Controls VITALITY manual documents a commercial code containing a plant identifier, a decade digit, a month letter and a year digit. This is evidence that a universal “first two digits equal year” shortcut is unsuitable across product families.
A masked date-code example
8001 1 F 2 ••••••
In the cited commercial format, 8001 identifies the plant, 1 the 2010s decade, F June and 2 the year within the decade: June 2012.
This commercial illustration is not a residential York decoding rule and is not a promise that our lookup supports this format. If the lookup cannot establish a date, ask the dealer with the full model and serial.
