Maintenance tips
A few minutes of care helps appliances reach the end of their typical life, and sometimes beyond. Always follow the maker's manual, and turn off power or gas before working on anything.
Refrigerator
- Vacuum the condenser coils once or twice a year.
- Wipe the door gaskets and check they seal.
- Replace the water filter as the maker recommends, often every 6 months.
Dishwasher
- Clean the filter monthly.
- Check the spray arms for blocked holes.
- Run a hot, empty cycle with dishwasher cleaner now and then.
Washer
- Leave the door or lid open after use to dry it out.
- Clean the door seal and the drain filter.
- Replace rubber fill hoses about every 5 years, or use braided steel.
Dryer
- Clean the lint screen after every load.
- Clean the vent duct to the outside every year: lint build-up is a fire risk.
Water heater
- Drain a few litres from the tank once a year to clear sediment.
- Test the temperature and pressure relief valve once a year.
- Have the anode rod checked every 3 to 5 years.
Furnace
- Change or clean the air filter every 1 to 3 months.
- Keep the area around it clear.
- Have it serviced once a year.
Air conditioner or heat pump
- Keep leaves and snow clear of the outdoor unit.
- Change the indoor filter regularly.
- Have it serviced every year or two.
Range and oven
- Clean spills promptly.
- Check that gas burners light quickly with a steady blue flame.
