Keep the model, serial and any separate production code or printed date together. Not every serial number contains a publicly decodable date.
Carrier’s guide to finding the model and serial numberCarrier serial number: production week and year
Carrier HVAC week/year serial format · Sources checked October 12, 2026
A documented Carrier format places the production week in serial positions 1–2 and the year in positions 3–4. The following letter identifies the manufacturing location; it is not a month letter.
Read the serial from the unit rating plate. A furnace and its outdoor cooling unit can have different manufacture dates, even when they were installed together.
A masked date-code example
4810P•••••
In this format, 48 is the fiscal production week and 10 is the year 2010. This gives a week, not an exact calendar day.
The cited manual covers the 38AU condensing-unit family. Older and other Carrier families can use different formats; check the model before applying the example.
Checking the manufacture date
Use the format that belongs to this product family. A printed production date, a supported serial code or manufacturer confirmation can establish the age. Repeating year codes may leave more than one possible year; a model-series introduction date helps narrow the range but does not date your individual unit.
How long does a Carrier furnace last?
Furnaces typically last 15 to 25 years. Use, water quality and maintenance matter more than the brand. Change the filter every one to three months and have it serviced yearly.

- Can I decode a Carrier serial number myself?
- Some Carrier product families have serial date codes, while others need a printed date or manufacturer confirmation. Repeated year codes can produce multiple candidate years; the model and original documents help resolve them.
